Opening of NEXXUS : Land Acknowledgement
The NEXXUS exhibition was opened with a Land Acknowledgement, performed by visual artist / musician, Garth Erasmus. Lighting and soundscapes were dimmed down in the AVA Gallery as a form of respect, whilst Garth lead into the ceremony with musical offerings on the Ghôrrah. When the moment presented itself, Garth spoke the following words into the exhibition space that holds the NEXXUS exhibition:
"The NEXXUS project acknowledges and pays respects to the Khoi and San people as the Traditional Owners and sovereign custodians of the Land on which we practice and gather today.
We cherish the deep spiritual attachments to their ancestors and the relationship they have to this country and its peoples, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hope for the well-being of South Africa.
We must always remember that under the concrete and asphalt this land is, was and always will be KhoiSan land."
